January 1 / Snow in Victoria
I was talking about that very subject this morning with my friend, Sharon, S. Cal. born and raised, no knowledge of snow except skiing up a local mtn. I remember at least one good freeze each winter as kids and then as adult in Van. (Lost Lagoon). Doesn't happen anymore, does it? And Therese, I agree, don't like the form letters, usually they are just too damn cheerful and never ring very authentic.
If you pray, keep my mum and dad and my sis Kath and I in your prayers. We will be separating them after 61 years of marriage (Jan.10th anniversary) to place mum where she needs to be to receive care. This will occur in the next 2 weeks I am told, so I will have 2 days notice to get up there. On the other side of family life, my younger daughter, Karin, became engaged in December, wedding to be in September in the Seattle area. Hanging in faith! All is well, and life is indeed Good

January 12 / Class of '60 hits 60
Hi former classmates:
Ron McMicking, my good friend of 55 years, called me last night in Toronto to wish me Happy Birthday (for today, January 12). We discussed whether I might be the first in this calendar year to hit 60. A point of discussion? Yesterday, my Department gave me a surprise party (I guess because I am their Chair) and provided me with a T-shirt with a facing, "60 and still running." Today, my wife gave me a Capricorn character doll that says, on his T-shirt, "Old Goat". I took both messages as compliments.
Looking forward to the party in June. Note the slight modification to my e-mail address.
Regards to all,
John

January 20 / In Memoriam

Nancy (Emery) Schwabe
1942 – 2002
Classmate Nancy (Emery) Schwabe died January 20th in Victoria after a lengthy battle with cancer. Nancy attended Oak Bay High for just one year but so enjoyed the school and the many friendships she made along the way. After a little coaxing, Nancy came to our reunion and not only enjoyed it but was very surprised and pleased that so many remembered her.
There will be an Open House celebration at Nancy's home at 1851 Pastel Crescent on Saturday, January 26 from 12:00pm to 4:00pm.
