May 2 / Mall Show
Thanks for the fine feedback on my watercolors - done on paper, only the boats is on canvas. Many fine artists exhibit in Tsawwassen -- one had a painting accepted by the Prince Charles Canadian Watercolor collection, many exhibit at the Canadian Federation of Artists on Granville Island. The show is on the main street into Tsawwassen -- in the first Mall (right side of the road). Many pictures will be in the Center for the Visual Arts on the main drag, too -- across from MacDonald's. Hope you'll drop in for a look, as it's worth a visit.

May 17 / I've been Googled!
Sorry to butt in, but about a year ago my #1 daughter (there are 2) called to tell me she was surfing on Google and found my name listed on your website - twice! I'm finally online now so thought I might check it out. What a hoot! It took hours to wade through all that nostalgia, trying to remember things long forgotten, or forget things long remembered. It got me wondering what many of my old classmates from '58 have been up to all these years.
Back to the reason for this note. Mark Trueman asked if anyone knew where I was. I'm sure most of you don't know who I was, let alone where, but if Mark is still checking this site, I can be reached at the e-mail address below.
The other reference to my name had Mike Gibbs recalling how I had turned him on to Jazz and Miles Davis at Big Ben's Burgers. Sorry Mike, please forgive me. I didn't know then that years later a Kenny G. could happen.
Best of luck to all.
Live from beautiful downtown Burbank.

Hi Blaine - nice to hear from you! Thanks for joining in!

May 18 / Big Ben's Burgers
I don't recall the name "Big Ben's Burgers," I do remember the "Rendezevous" on Oak Bay Ave. Ben had a restaurant in Esquimalt, was that the one? Many hours were spent by yours truly and others at the Rendezvous. Possibly this is where I was introduced to jazz and in particular Brubeck's music. The sign at the entrance read "There's no place like this place, so this is the place" Ben made the best burgers in town and many of us followed him to Esquimalt.

May 20 / Big Ben's Rendezvou
As I recall, Ben relocated to Esquimalt in '60 or '61. The original burger joint was on Oak Bay Ave. To me it was always referred to as Big Bens Burgers, but then I'm older than you guys so what do I know. The name Rendezvous does ring a bell though. Maybe (thanks to Miss Burridge), I've subconciously tried to block out any French sounding words.

Some will remember Ben's place as The Little Wheel – Gary

May 21 / omygawd, Blaine Tringham
I remember Blaine Tringham -- trumpet player. I've often wondered what ever became of ... I've booked Ian McDougal and his group a couple of times, to perform here on Pender Island, and through him hear news of Don Clark.
So what have you been doing since we all hung out at Willows Beach, Blaine? Did you continue in music?

May 22 / Ben's Place
Hey, I recall "The Little Wheel" on Oak Bay Avenue, a hangout where there were great greasy burgers and good fellowship. I think there was a proprietor before Ben Laughren (sp.?) but the name doesn't come to mind. The Rendezvous was also a name of the Monterey at the roundabout in the earlier fifties, I believe.
Great to hear from Blaine after all this time. I concur on the Kenny G critique ...remember listening to Bonnie (a guy) Sprinkle at The Wharf Club playing the soprano sax with a few of my jazz buff friends way back when???? Think it was Big Ben who nicknamed Blaine as "Rip". Ben tried to show us some of his wrestling moves one day and I remember getting a bleery eye from this instruction!
Cheers and lookin' fwd to seeing y'all at Mearns do in June

May 22 / OBHS Jazz Bum Loafers
I'm beginning to feel like an intruder. Is there a quota on the number of times an outsider can log in?
In answer to your question Terry. Yes I have managed to avoid working for a living for over 40 years by blowing into a piece of plumbing and getting paid for it – for the last 22 years in the LA studios. I still keep in touch with Don Clark & Ian. I'll be seeing them in August in Vancouver for the annual Musicians Assn. golf tournament.
A bunch of us from OBHS later went on to careers in music (jazz bums all). Myself, Don, Bob McDonald, Pete Thompson and Lou Hilton often worked together in Vancouver in the '60s thru '70s.

May 24 / Big Ben
I remember Big Ben as one of the pioneers in swimming the Straits of Juan de Fuca from Cattle Point to Port Angeles after Flo Chadwick etc.
After all this where, as far as I can remember, he was studied at U of Washington for having a very low body temperature he opened his Big Bens Burgers here and there around Victoria. I think that the last one I can remember was out at the Gorge where there was a rocket (or a plane) that had crashed on the roof. (Please correct me it I am wrong!!)
Anyways, I remember Ben well as he was cook at the camp where I had my last job in Canada. I was working for the Dept. of Highways in Gold River, and he was the cook at the camp where there were a lot of different companies.
I'll never forget the breakfasts that he served at 05:30 where one wanted to only have one fried egg but got 6, then with all the other stuff from a large pile of Bacon, sausages, pancakes and to finish with French Toast. There was absolutely no way that you could only have 'just a little' of anything (and who is hungry at that time of day?). I was working from 6 am to 10 pm so the breakfasts would have been good if they hadn't been so early.
