Oak Bay High 75th Anniversary May 68, 2005 |
Chairman Phil reports: |
Greetings again to the Class of 60: |
Lianne and I went to the Briefing last night and heard all about plans from a group of very enthusiastic teachers and staff. The countdown has started with celebration festivities now only one month away. |
If you havent got the word yet, this is the 75th anniversary of our High Schools move from Oak Bay Avenue to Cranmore Road. The celebration is spurred on by the fact that in 5 10 years the school is due to be demolished and rebuilt or severely renovated, such that if any of us are still here in 2030 for the 100th anniversary party we might not recognize the old place.
|
A complete line-up of activities for the re-union weekend is available on the schools website at http://oakbay.sd61.bc.ca/ where you can also download a reunion registration brochure and complete schedule of events. |
Our class has a designated room to meet and greet, which is available Saturday (and Sunday if we want it.) |
Our focus is on the May 7th Reunion Gala Dance and Auction, which will be held at the Oak Bay Recreation centre. There are 800 tickets available for this and it WILL sell out, so please get your registration in now as part of the Class of 60 contingent. We have reserved 8 tables of 10 and can still ask for more. Be sure to let either Richard Goodall or Dave Foster know when you register so we can keep track of those who have booked into our Class group. |
Drinks and nibbles will be available throughout the Gala evening, which starts at 7 pm with a live band starting at 8. Dress is casual since it is likely to be warm in the arena. For folks visiting from out of town, one of the assisting sponsors is the Accent Inn (owned by Terry Farmer), which is offering special Reunion weekend discounted rates. |
Saturday afternoon events include the Tweed Curtain Tea, an Alumni Games, and Band and Choral Jam sessions. Former band members may rent instruments for the occasion from Larsens Music, Victoria. Now, heres a secret Ill trust you to keep. Someone, not named John Philip Sousa, has written a march for the occasion and will dedicate it to the school from the Class of 60, so you may want to come out to hear its band debut. |
Were hoping that Laurel Johnsons magnificent paintings will be on display at the Fine Arts Showcase on Friday night when there is a huge line-up of talented Oak Bay grads scheduled to perform. More on this later; meanwhile any of our Class talented artists who would like to take part in this Fine Arts Showcase can contact either Alana Charlton acharlton@sd61.bc.ca or Sandra Walton Sandra_Walton@telus.nt. |
Finally, a word about archives: the school is looking for help in this regard and is collecting photographs or memorabilia. If you are ready to part with any such items, please contact tjthomson@sd61.bc.ca or (250) 598-3361. There is very little history of all the classes over the past 75 years, which is too bad considering the schools significant achievements and successes. |
See yall at the Celebration. Its our 45th reunion year too, and that in itself is worth celebrating. |
Cheers |

The following email was received from John. Congratulations are certainly in order, but we will be sorry that he cannot attend the 75th Richard |
Thanks for keeping me updated. I am actually getting a medal for my career research achievements in Animal Biology on May 10. I have to give the Medal Lecture at Queen's University on that date.
I also have two symposium addresses (Boston and New Hampshire), one of the symposium in my honor, at international meetings in mid-late May. I have to be prepared for these two talks. As you can imagine, it would be a real squeeze for me to attend the OBHS celebrations. I feel very badly about this, for I don't like missing these opportunities to meet with old friends. However, this medal is very special and a wonderful way to finish my career. I am officially retiring on July 1, 2005. |
Best wishes, |
John |

We are sorry to tell you that our classmate and friend, Pat Fleming, passed away on Tuesday, April 19th. Since our reunion in 2000, Pat so enjoyed connecting again with old classmates, joining us for our 60th birthday party and attending walks and gatherings. In February of this year, Pat managed to join the reunion committee at the snug for the last time. She will be missed. |
MANNING (Rivard), Patricia Kathleen (nee Fleming) Born in Quebec City on March 8, 1943, Pat began her new journey on April 19, 2005. She went to join her parents, Barbara and Eric. She passed peacefully with her beloved children and sister at her side. Her zest and love for life remained until the end as she enjoyed good food, good drink, her friends and her family. She leaves the world less bright for her children, Lisa (Darren), Kathi, Christa and Rob; her grandchildren, Carly, Jessica, Evan, Colby, Sydney and Olivia; her lifelong friend and sister Judi (Wayne Stewart); her husband, Glenn Manning and her collection of close friends. A service for Pat will occur on Monday, April 25, 2005 at 1:00 pm at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets. A celebration of her life will follow at CFSA, 1001 Maplebank, in Esquimalt. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pat's name to the wonderful staff at Victoria Hospice and/or the Canadian Red Cross would be greatly appreciated. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com. 72068 |
