SARGENT, Janice Eleanor On Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Victoria Hospice at the age of 63 years. Janice, loving and beloved wife of John and mother of Laurie (Glen Linder) and Ted (fiancee Shana Kelley). Fond Amma of Clara Linder and very recently arrived grandson Joshua Linder. Also survived by her brother Alan Hickman, and aunts Eleanor Thompson and Dorothy Parkinson. Pre-deceased by her parents Grace and Harry Hickman. Janice was born in Victoria, B.C. where she attended school and Victoria College (now UVic). She pursued studies in French language and literature at UBC and Harvard, and then taught French briefly at Queen's University. She worked as a free-lance translator in Ottawa while raising her children, and subsequently as a policy and planning officer with the Ottawa-Carleton Board of Education. She was active as a volunteer at her children's school in Kanata, in figure skating, and in the Kanata United Church choir and other church activities. After retiring, she and John moved to Victoria in 2004 where she rapidly became active in St. Aidan's United Church and in the P.E.O. sisterhood, even though facing an increasingly difficult struggle with cancer. Special thanks to Dr. Bernstein and other doctors and staff at the B.C. Cancer Agency, Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria Hospice and Palliative Care program, and to Dr. Verma and other doctors and staff at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre and the Queensway-Carleton Hospital. Thanks as well to cancer support groups in Ottawa and Victoria. A funeral service will be held at St. Aidan's United Church on Saturday, July 15, at 3:30 pm, with interment to follow at a later date. A memorial service will also be held at Kanata United Church at a date to be determined in August or September. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the University of Victoria Grace and Harry Hickman Scholarship Fund or to a charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com . 269585
