School Trip |
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers the trip, who went, including the teachers, how many we were, where we went, anecdotes! The slides I took have disappeared and I didn't keep a travel diary, but somebody else may have? Judy, I remember trying to get into the duvet cover on the bed in Austria, I had never seen one before and didn't know how to use it, thought it was a sort of sleeping bag! The whole expedition seems like quite an adventure for its time. |

1960 BCSTA Trip |
Who will ever forget the instruction: "Stay in your fives"?? Do you recall the green blazers with BCSTA (B.C. Student Travel Association) labels on them? What happened to them? Did we have to turn them in afterwards? And the suitcases we all had? Recall the organisation required to get us all on trains (and off again) in all those countries. All organised by Mr Mercer from Victoria without email!! Do you recall having to take our own sheets to make up the beds in the train across Canada - and picking them up again in Montreal, laundered, on the way home? And the "champagne flight" on BOAC? And the performance some of our number gave at a Canadian embassy in ?? - was it Brussels? Do we know if any of our chaperones are still alive?

Trip to Europe |
If my memory serves me right (which it doesn't often these days) there were 166 of us and 9 teachers on this trip. |
One thing that stands out in my mind is I had a leaky upper berth on the train across Canada and spent several soggy nights. I remember our stay in Paris and the wonderful place we stayed in Rome. It had been built for the Olympics and we got to stay there first. The Italian men climbing up the walls outside. I remember the hostel we stayed in that had hay bales for beds (there was a lot of sneezing that night). Loved Lausanne, Switzerland. |
Mr. Harris was our group leader....a lovely man. I don't know if there was another teacher from Oak Bay High other than Mr. Mercer. In Venice we bought some wine in a corner store and 6 of us shared it. We thought we had got away with murder and I don't think we were too impressed with the taste. |
I have all my pictures but they are totally out of order and in slide form. I have been saying for 40 yrs. that I am going to go through them and put them in order.......very probably impossible. |

Obituary / Craig Stewart |

T Craig Stewart

|
T. Craig Stewart August 17, 1940 - July 20, 2013 |
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Craig Stewart on July 20, 2013 at the age of 72. Beloved husband of Jackie, cherished brother-in-law of Bud and Doreen Scully; loving uncle of Braydon Scully, Dawn Ayer, Tim and Shannon Soro; great-uncle of Davin and Robyn Soro. |
Craig was born on August 17, 1940 in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Predeceased by his father Terence Andrew Stewart, superintendent, RCMP and his mother Isabella Stewart. Craig spent his formative years in Victoria, British Columbia before following in his father's footsteps and joining the RCMP. |
Known for his dry wit and love of martinis, Craig was a 27-year-veteran with the RCMP Security Service and CSIS. Craig transferred to Toronto where he met his life-long partner, Jackie in the late '60's. They always treated each other with love and respect and had great joy with many friends throughout their 44 years of marriage. Craig and Jackie were thrilled to live in Hong Kong from 1971 to 1973 - an adventure that inspired their life-long love of travelling. |
Continuing to rise through the ranks, his contributions to security were acknowledged by the U.S. Secret Service. Craig retired from CSIS as Deputy Director General of Counter Intelligence and then worked in private practice. |
Craig and Jackie moved to Thornbury in 1993 where they enjoyed their love of skiing, wine making, dinner parties and supporting many local charities. Craig enjoyed two full decades of retirement and loved golfing at Lora Bay. He dearly loved his two kitties Duncan and Russell. |
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Grey Bruce Health Services Oncology Clinic or the Meaford General Hospital would be most appreciated. Special thanks to Dr. Aboo, the nursing and support staff at the Oncology Clinic in Owen Sound, Dr. James Wong and Nancy Wong, Meaford. |

WALT, Janet Elizabeth 1943 - 2013 |
It is with heavy hearts we announce that our beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend Janet died suddenly on July 25, 2013 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria. |
Janet was born in Victoria on October 29, 1943. She is survived by her beloved sons Chris (Amy), and Darren, grandsons Gio and Markus, her sisters Sheila and Connie, and her brother Patrick, plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. |
Janet's husband Ken died one year ago and was much loved and dearly missed by her and the whole family. She loved her grandsons deeply, and the highlight of her day was to go to watch them play baseball and soccer, never missing a game. |
Jan and Ken enjoyed RVing for many years, travelling throughout BC and down south with good friends. Janet lived life fully, always having fun, enjoying her family, friends and her constant companion Lucky the dog. She will be missed dearly. |
The family would especially like to thank Dr. Perchinsky and the staff of the Cardiac Unit for their valiant efforts to keep Janet with us. There will be no service by request. A private celebration of Janet's life for family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice or the SPCA. - |

Obituary / Mr Royston Mercer |
|
Word was received this date from Andy Cleland (Class of 62) that our teacher Mr. Royston Mercer passed away this week in Bristol, England.
|
Since our first reunion in 2000, many attempts were made to locate Mr. Mercer without success. More recently, and after numerous inquiries, Andy successfully made contact with a family member who supplied a mailing address in Bristol. Although the letter was not answered, a message was received from the husband of one of Mr. Mercer's grand daughters to say that he had passed away having been in declining health for some time and recently falling and breaking his hip. |
Mr. Mercer was 88 years of age. |

EVANS, Penny (nee Dalby) May 24, 1943 September 7, 2013 |
With profound sadness we announce the passing of Penny, our beautiful and beloved mother, grandma, sister, aunt, and friend. Predeceased by her mother and father, and husbands Ed Cole and Dennis Evans, Penny passed after a short but courageous battle with cancer. |
She will be remembered and cherished always by her daughters, Melanie Cole, Lisa Dregas (Mark), and Georgina Auger (Curt), her grandchildren Ellie and Cooper, her siblings Joan Obee (Les), Bob Dalby (Kate), Vicki Guiguet (Mark), and Richard Dalby (Angela). Penny also leaves behind to mourn many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and friends, and of course, her special little friend, Coco. |
Penny will best be remembered for her love of music and gardening, as well as her quick wit and generous soul. She was always willing to help those less fortunate than herself and appreciated everything she had. |
The family extends thanks for the compassionate care given to Penny by the Jubilee Hospital's 8th floor staff, the Beacon Community Service's Homecare and Victoria Hospice. We also give very special thanks to Georgie for the love and care she gave to Penny at home. |
At Penny's request, there will be no service, but donations may be given to the Sidney Food Bank. |
This world is not conclusion,
A sequel stands beyond.
Invisible as music, But positive, as sound.
