One of the popular stores was Usher's, which was in the same block as Oak Bay Hardware. It was run by the Browns during the forties and early fifties. They sold magazines, newspapers, smokes, candy and had a small soda fountain down at one end. |
Just about everyone in the area frequented the store to pick up the Saturday Evening Post or Life magazine, and all the kids would stop in to buy their favourite comic book for ten cents. They also sold the famous Little Big Books featuring such heros as Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy and Buck Rogers. At the very end of the store was the Oak Bay Post Office, which they ran. |
They moved to run the Golden Galleon when it was built and the post office followed them. When Bill Brown passed away unexpectedly, Mrs. Brown continued running the post office and restaurant where they made the best fish and chips. After the Golden Galleon, the post office moved a couple of times, but Mrs. Brown continued as post master until her retirement. She was well liked and knew everyone. |
