RECOLLECTIONS
|
Recollections may be abridged for length and/or clarity
Our family lived on Monterey Avenue, and then moved to Wilmot Place. We patronized Oak Bay Produce from about 1945. |
Oak Bay Produce sold groceries and confections. It was run by Mr. Gain Gee and his wife. Their daughter was Mona Gee and Sue Wong was a family member who managed the store. Mona was born in Canada, attended Vic High School and graduated around 1950. She worked in the store for many years. Another employee was Thelma, also Chinese. |
They were a very hard working family, and you could often see old Mrs. Gee washing vegetables in a washtub on the floor of the back room. Their produce was grown locally on the island during the spring, summer and fall. The family knew me from the time I was about four years old and gave us a box of chocolates every Christmas. When I left Victoria and got married in Alberta, they sent a wedding gift. |

Sue and Mona were the names of 2 of the retailers there, both Chinese Canadian. I used to love going there because Sue always remembered me, and the place smelled like oranges and carrot greens. |

I remember buying candy and pop from "Sue" during the 70s. We called the store "Sue's". There was a store that sold musical instruments next door to Oak Bay Produce that became part of what now is "The Blethering Place" |
