RECOLLECTIONS
|
Besides the 1015 stools at the counter, at the back they had a post office counter that sold stamps, etc. |
I don't remember that there were tables in the shop, but there was a larger area at the front of the shop. |
Don Ingham, OBHS class of 1960 |
I remember the Golden Galleon very well in the late 1950s when the Browns ran it. |
There were tables, a jukebox, a soda fountain with stools and a post office which had followed the Browns after leaving Usher's convenience store. Mr. Brown passed away in the early years of the business and his wife carried on with the cafe and of course the post office. |
What I recall in particular were their fish and chips. The deep frier was at the back and they had a good take-out business. Many a Friday night we picked up an order neatly wrapped in a page of the daily Colonist. |
Richard Goodall, OBHS class of 1960 |
If you didn't dawdle on Bowker Creek, there was just enough time to visit the Golden Galleon for lunch while at school. Mrs Brown's cheeseburger and fries were the BEST, and that was my reward to myself when I got paid from my paper route with the Colonist. |
Mark Smith, OBHS class of 1967 |
The Golden Galleon was built by the Zaluski family and was run by Virginia and her sisters. Not sure of the spelling of family name. |
Ron Guy |
My mom was Virginia Zaluski and her dad Paul Zaluski built this fish and chip place. Paul was a stone mason by trade and travelled to Banff to build the welcome stone sign. Paul also built other buildings on Oak Bay Avenue. My mom and her sisters worked in this shop. The sisters names were Bernice and Jacqueline. I believe the woman behind the counter, in the first picture to be my mom. I wish I knew more. |
