The "Tilikum" in Oak Bay - 1901

This photo of "Tilikum" (and presumably Captain John Voss and friends) was taken in 1901 just before embarking on her historic world-wide voyage on May 27, 1901. Voss, on a remarkable solo voyage, successfully navigated this 12-meter, converted dugout canoe across the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans.
The photo was taken in Oak Bay at the point of departure – about where the Oak Bay Marina stands today. In the background is the Mount Baker Hotel, which was destroyed by fire in 1902.
During the 1930s "Tilikum" was on display outside the Crystal Gardens as she underwent restoration - a retirement project of Captain Victor Jacobson in 1935 and 1936.
When Thunderbird Park opened in 1941 "Tilikum" was housed under a cedar roof as a feature attraction.
"Tilikum" is now housed and on display in Victoria's Maritime Museum in Bastion Square.
